You know, I used to accredit CNN with having some integrity. I knew that they were "Mainstream and therefore subject to Corporate oversight" but I still used them as a constant and trusted source of information.
I can tell you the exact moment that they lost me.
May 21, 2005 (plus or minus a day, I can't be sure)
CNN newscast was doing a "Shocked" and "Biting" regurgitation of the "Appalling" story that THE SUN (London Newspaper) had released photos of Saddam Hussein in Prison. Oh the outrage! This will have Serious Impact! (queue the random stock video footage of 20-25 "Arab men" of no particular country standing in street shouting randomly)
Oh the newscaster was visibly moved with his concern that these leaked photos were going to cause trouble.
"In fact we have video taken just today of Saddam supporters outraged in the streets of [city]." (roll tape of guys in street yelling)The problem with the photos was that they showed Saddam in his underwear. Since he was a prisoner he had to do his own laundry, and someone snapped photos of him on wash day. Now, I understand that in the local culture (Iraq) it was very degrading for photos to be taken and shown. The newscaster even said as much, and was calling THE SUN "irresponsible" for leaking such photos. The newscaster was going on about how "terrible" and "disruptive" it was for them to reveal these photos, "Irresponsible" was his big word for the day.
Then, so the people get the full effect, he showed the photos in question. There were several and he was still talking about how "irresponsible" it was of THE SUN to release the photos... AS HE WAS SHOWING THEM, full screen and in detail. With just the right amount of commentary on the photos to make things worse. Like pointing out that in Saddam's culture it's degrading for a Man to have to do "woman's work", but since he's in Prison he has to do it himself. Then in other photo's he's wearing a long robe, like pajamas (long shirt to your ankles style) and the newscaster is pointing out that "This is not actually a Dress". It struck me that he was denying the word "Dress" a little too often, seemed like he used the word several times just to imprint it in your head "this is Saddam in a Dress".
So yeah, that's the day I completely lost all respect for CNN as a new source. They berated another news organization for releasing photos, then they broadcast the photos themselves with commentary that only made things worse.
I admit that I still read the CNN rss feeds regularly. But I know that CNN is just a corporate mouthpiece and is not a credible news source, so I take it with a grain or two of salt. I don't trust them.
And yes, I'm going to link the NYTimes article on the matter. So you can see that at least the story I'm talking about is not just in my head. No photos on this page.
