Video Tech
You may find that you come across a Youtube or Google video that you particularly enjoy and want to keep or in some cases copy for a friend. (example: Mom isn't much for watching Youtube.) I've found a two step process that really enables this.
The first step is getting the streaming video off the website (Google videos or Youtube) and this is made really simple by the website. Keepvid.com
Go to Youtube, find the video you like.
Copy the URL from that video.
Go over to Keepvid.com
Input that URL on the URL line, click download
on the next page right click on the download and choose "Save as"
The video will download to the folder you specified.
That video most likely is not in a format or codec that your mother has, so you will want to convert it to a standard MPG or AVI format. (or DivX)
This leads you to the Second step.
Super (C)
Super(C) is a video converter that is 100% free. But if you go to their web page you do have to jump through a few hoops to actually get to the download link. This is because their website is paid for by advertising and they want you to see all the adverts possible so that they can pay for the website. Reasonable enough I guess.
I tried to provide a direct link to the setup file for download, but no luck. BTW you MUST use IE to visit the page and download, Firefox doesn't work.
Super(C) is admittedly a simplified GUI interface for the command line functions that are freely available to convert videos. Just so you don't have to remember or decipher a 132 character string to convert the files from format A to format B.
I used both of these today to download and convert video that is freely available to watch on Google video and Youtube. Seems to work just fine and my security software didn't throw up any red flags.
